How to Pay for Claude in Nigeria (2026)

Claude Pro is billed in US dollars by Anthropic, not in naira. Here is what it costs, how to subscribe from Nigeria, why the charge fails, and how to stop it failing.

AI tools billed abroad, each on its own card

Claude does not bill in naira. Anthropic charges in US dollars, the same way OpenAI does, and that one fact is behind nearly every problem Nigerians have with the subscription.

The good news is that it is a solvable problem, and the fix is the same one that keeps every other dollar subscription alive.

What Claude Pro costs

Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month if you pay for a year up front. Both prices are in US dollars.

Your bank converts that to naira at its own rate on the day the charge lands, and may add a cross-border fee on top. So the naira figure moves month to month even though the dollar price never changes. Budget slightly above the sticker price, because the rate will not wait for you.

How to subscribe from Nigeria

  1. Log in at claude.ai.
  2. Open your account settings and find the plan section.
  3. Choose Claude Pro, monthly or annual.
  4. Enter your card details, using a billing address that matches the card.

Before you start, make sure international transactions are actually enabled on your card. Nigerian banks switched them off through the 2022 dollar shortage and only restored them in July 2025, so it is worth confirming with your bank rather than assuming.

Even with the card switched on, the charge still has to clear on the exact day the merchant asks, and nobody tells you when it does not. You find out later, when the subscription has already stopped.

Why the charge fails

It is almost never Anthropic. It is the crossing.

  • International transactions have to be switched on for the card at all, which many banks only restored in July 2025
  • If the naira moves, a charge that fit last month might not fit this month
  • International transactions have to be enabled on the card at all
  • Any conversion fee sits on top of the $20

And nobody warns you. There is no message when a foreign charge is declined. You find out when Claude quietly drops you back to the free plan, usually in the middle of something.

The fix: fund the card before the date, not on it

The failure mode above has one cause: the money has to be there at the exact moment a foreign company reaches for it, and you have no warning if it is not.

Subsecute inverts that. Claude gets its own virtual USD card, and we charge the card or direct debit you saved a few days before the renewal date, convert at the rate shown to you, and put the money on that card. By the time Anthropic asks, the money is already sitting there.

You also get told before any of it happens. A reminder lands on WhatsApp with the amount and the date, and a button to keep it or cancel. Nothing is debited until you say so.

Because it is a card of its own, cancelling Claude never touches your ChatGPT card, and a problem with one merchant cannot reach the rest.

Paying for someone else's Claude

If you are covering a subscription for somebody else, which is common enough with AI tools in a team or a family, two things are worth knowing:

  • Share a gift link and let someone else fund a specific subscription of yours. They pay once at checkout and never see the rest of your account.
  • Or run a plan, invite up to 25 people, and set a monthly limit that applies to each of them. Their spending comes out of your balance and stops at the ceiling you set.
